About this Sermon |

Revelation 7:9-17

On All Saints’ Day, we find ourselves picturing a big ol’ family reunion, where we sit elbow-to-elbow around the table with all the saints, both the living and the dead. Revelation 7 paints a picture of the heavenly family reunion we are anticipating. What do family reunions have in common with that picture of what is yet to be? All Saints Day provides an opportunity for us to consider that we are already at the table, surrounded by those that encourage and support and bolster us as we live through hard days.

Prelude – “It Is Well with My Soul” arr. Raney – Melanie Manges

Welcome to Worship – Caleb Clement

Gathering Song “Holy Ground”

We are standing on holy ground,
And I know that there are angels all around. Let us praise Jesus now;
We are standing in his presence on holy ground. (Repeat)

Call to Worship – (from Seasons Online) – Caleb Clement

In all our weakness and strength,
with our youth-filled spirits and aging bodies,
we come to be your people, O God.
Strong in faith and eager with questions,
singing our praise and whispering our prayers,
we come to be your people, O God.
Filled with saintly determination
yet mindful of our human limitations,
we come to be your people, O God.
Made strong in your endless love for us,
we know ourselves to be yours and
we come to be your people, O God.
May we truly become your people today. Amen.

Hymn of Praise – “How Firm a Foundation”

(Verse 1) How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than to you he has said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
(Verse 3) When through the deep waters I call you to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with you in trouble to bless,
And sanctify to you your deepest distress.

“Just As I Am” arr. Paxton

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Invitation to the Table

Hymn of Hope – “When Peace Like a River”

(Verse 1) When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll,
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul.”
(Refrain) It is well (it is well)
With my soul, (with my soul,)
It is well, it is well with my soul.
(Verse 3) My sin- O, the bless of this glorious thought, my sin
-not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross
And I bear it no more:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
(Refrain) It is well (it is well)
With my soul, (with my soul,)
It is well, it is well with my soul.
(Verse 4) And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend: “Even so- it is well with my soul”
(Refrain) It is well (it is well)
With my soul, (with my soul,)
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
