Dear First Baptist Church,

The alarm clock is going off- it is time!  It is time for us wake up, crawl out of our cozy covers, and to (once again) press into the work God has been calling us to: the work of being a people of impact in our community.

I have been so impressed with the ways I have already observed you being a people of impact in my almost-4 years of being part of this community of faith:

-I have watched you care deeply about those who experience hunger in our community, which manifested itself in the weekly bread giveaway for over 25 years, and the ongoing community garden project which is in at least its sixth growing season.  I watched you volunteer to pick up groceries for those at home during the pandemic, and you have faithfully volunteered in the food pantry, and I have even watched you learn more about how we can advocate to lawmakers to help feed hungry people.

-I have watched you care deeply for those experiencing homelessness in our community as you generously offered our fellowship hall to be an annex to the shelters during this winter of COVID-19.

-I have watched you care for those who need a little extra help each month as you provide a location for a hygiene pantry and free lunch to be hosted once a month. Not to mention your decades-long relationship with Lafayette Urban Ministries.

-I have watched you show up to learn from those who come from different religious backgrounds, as we stepped deeper in relationship with the other downtown churches; with our friends at Temple Israel; and by worshipping collectively with Jews, Muslims, and other Christians each Thanksgiving.

-I have listened as you’ve told me about the many other ways you add your considerable vitality to our community- whether you volunteer at the hospital, plant flowers, serve on a board of a nonprofit, give out backpacks of food with the Rotary Club, or simply check in with your neighbor to see how they are faring.

First Baptist, you are a people of impact.

And now that so many of us are enjoying a bit more freedom after being vaccinated, it is time for us to physically start showing up in our community again and to visibly be these people of impact. (masked & distant, of course, but present.)

One opportunity is very much in the works still, but I hope you’ll put Wednesday, May 19 on your calendar.  We’re hosting a blood drive in our fellowship hall from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and we need as many people to sign up to give blood as possible.  We’re also hoping to invite our neighborhood and the downtown community to participate- and to offer our hospitality to them.

With Great Hope,
Pastor Lisa Hood

I look forward to seeing you- and joining you in this work- soon.
