About this Sermon |

Joshua 2: 1-21
When we meet Rahab, we learn that she is living in the midst of peril. When she meets the two spies sent to Jericho by Joshua, ahead of what will be the conquering Israelite army and completing the trajectory of the Exodus story, Rahab is absolutely certain that the LORD will prevail. She makes the decision to respond to this time of peril by acting in an unexpected way- by aiding the spies in their work, and then asking them to extend protection to she & and her family in turn. How do we prepare for times of peril? What does it look like to be faithful to God whenever we experience peril, or when the peril is over? What does security look like as a follower of Christ?

The Summer Between: Adventures in Liminality

liminality [lim-uhnal-i-tee]: a state of transition between one stage and the next.

The Summer of 2020 finds us in the threshold between what was and what is yet to come. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are somewhere between lockdown and vaccine. In terms of civic life, we are somewhere between unrest and revolution.

What do people of faith do in liminal times like these?

Join First Baptist Church this summer for hope and perspective as Pastor Lisa Hood takes us on a journey through the scriptures, discovering how our spiritual ancestors navigated liminal times, and applying biblical truths for the living of these days.

Prelude“Now, Holy Spirit, We Pray to Thee” by Buxtehude Melanie Manges

Welcome to Worship Len Wilson

Gathering Song “Thy Word” #664

(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

(Verse 1) When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way,
Still you’re there right beside me.
And nothing will I fear as long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.

(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

(Verse 2) I will not forget your love for me,
and yet my heart forever is wandering.
Jesus, be my guide and hold me to your side;
And I will love you to the end.

(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Invocation Rev. Lisa Williams Hood

Call to Worship (based on Psalm 42, by Christine Longhurst) – Len Wilson

We’ve come to worship God,
Who makes streams flow from rock,
Who turns the parched earth into springs of water,
Who sends the rain from heaven
And makes the wilderness blossom and flourish.
As the deer thirsts for flowing streams,
So we thirst for You, O God.
Come, let’s worship our life-giving God,
Who pours out living water on all who thirst.

Hymn of Praise – “As The Deer” (verses 1 & 2) #471

(Verse 1) As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you;
You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship you.

(Refrain) You alone are my strength and shield; to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you.

(Verse 2) I want you more than gold or silver, only you can satisfy;
You alone are the real joy-giver and the apple of my eye.

(Refrain) You alone are my strength and shield; to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire and I long to worship you.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Sermon – Between Peril & Security – Rev. Hood

Hymn of Promise“To God Be The Glory” (verses 1 & 2) #66

(Verse 1) To God be the glory, great things he hath done,
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
Who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

(Refrain) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

(Verse 2) O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
to every believer the promise of God’
the vilest offender who truly believes,
that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

(Refrain) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,
And give him the glory, great things he hath done.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
