About this Sermon |

Mark 14:17-26
Nowhere do we find a clearer picture of what generosity looked liked to Jesus than when we find Him at the Last Supper. On World Communion Sunday, we explore what we can add to our working definition of generosity from Mark’s telling of this story

Exploring Generosity: Snapshots from the Gospel of Mark

Have you ever wondered what the virtue of generosity really looks like?

In 2 Corinthians, Paul encourages Christians to cultivate a spirit of generosity within themselves, but what does that mean? What does it look like? How can we be generous? Can you be generous if you don’t have much money?

And, how does the concept of generosity relate to things like stewardship, offerings, and tithes? Do we have to be generous until it hurts? Will our generosity be returned to us in this life? What are the markers of generosity? What might it look like for me to cultivate generosity within myself? What would it look like if we cultivated generosity amongst our congregation?

Join us as we explore this conversation by looking at a few snapshots of generosity taken by Jesus that we find in the Gospel of Mark.

Call to Worship – (written by Sharon Kirkpatrick Felton*) – Caleb Clement

Generosity: the quality of being kind,
Plentiful, Abundant,
Not selfish,
Willing to share,
Generous in spirit.
Come now to worship the God
who is the very definition of generosity,
and who calls each of us to be generous as well.

Hymn of Praise – “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” (verses 1, 2, & 4)

(Verse 1) Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Come, all who hear; now to his temple draw near,
Join me in glad adoration!
(Verse 2) Praise to the Lord, above all things so wondrously reigning;
Sheltering you under his wings, and so gently sustaining!
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining?
(Verse 4) Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him.
Let the Amen sound from his people again;
Gladly forever adore him.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
 as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Thanksgiving “Take My Life and Let it Be””

(Verse 1) Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord, to thee;
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of thy love, at the impulse of thy love.

(Verse 2) Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee;
Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only, for my King, always, only, for my King.

(Verse 4) Take my love, my God, I pour at thy feet its treasure store;
Take myself and I will be ever, only, all for thee, ever, only, all for thee.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
