About this Sermon |

Luke 15:1-32
In Luke 15, the Gospel writer presents three parables told by Jesus, immediately following each other: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost sons. Playing on the human tendency to seek out what we’ve lost, Jesus shows us a vital truth about God: that wherever we are, whatever we’ve done, God meets us. Again and again and again.

Prelude – “Near the Cross” arr. Raney – Melanie Manges, piano

Welcome to Worship – Len Wilson

Lenten Song “I Come to the Cross” – Worship Team

I come to the cross seeking mercy and grace;
I come to the cross where you died in my place.
Out of my weakness and into your strength;
Humbly I come to the cross.

Call to Worship* – Len WIlson

God meets us in the night
Before the sun rises,
Before the wound heals,
Before there are answers,
Before there is closure.
God meets us in the light
Where joy is effervescent,
Where laughter is contagious,
Where flowers bloom from cracks in the sidewalk,
And where people gather around the table.
God meets us at the threshold-
At the edge of the water,
At the beginning of the wilderness,
At the start of something new.
On the edge of faith.
And if God meets us in all those places,
Then surely God meets us in between
Staying with us through the wilderness.
We are not alone. God is all around.
Let us worship the God of the here and now.

Hymn of Praise – “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy”

(Verse 1) Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love, and pow’r.

(Chorus) I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in His arms.
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O, there are ten thousand charms.

(Verse 2) Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome,
God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance,
Every grace that brings you nigh.

(Chorus) I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in His arms.
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O, there are ten thousand charms.

Lenten Song, Again – “I Come to the Cross” – Worship Team

I come to the cross seeking mercy and grace;
I come to the cross where you died in my place.
Out of my weakness and into your strength;
Humbly I come to the cross.
Your arms are open, you call me by name, you welcome this child that was lost.
You paid the price for my guilt and my shame;
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come to the cross.

Sermon – Again and Again, God Meets Us – Rev. Hood

Hymn of Discipleship – “Softly and Tenderly”

(Verse 1) Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling,
Calling for you and for me;
See, on the portals he’s waiting and watching,
Watching for you and for me.

(Chorus) Come home (come home), come home (come home),
Ye who are weary, come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!

(Verse 3) O for the wonderful love he has promised,
Promised for you and for me!
Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon,
Pardon for you and for me.

(Chorus) Come home (come home), come home (come home),
Ye who are weary, come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, O sinner, come home!

“Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?” arr. Berry
Melanie Manges, piano

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.

Offertory – “Lamb of God, Pure and Holy” Pachelbel – Melanie Manges, organ
