About this Sermon |

Luke 23:44-56
In Luke 23, we meet a man who knows his opinion has not won the day. Joseph of Arimathea was a member of the high council who did not approve of the decision to hand over Jesus to the Romans for execution. What can we learn from Joseph’s actions that can help us to be faithful whenever our opinions inevitably do not win the day, either? How can we respond faithfully when we are outvoted, outmaneuvered, and outdone?

About this Series |

Who has shaped your faith? Who has nurtured you, baptized you, taught you, transformed you? Who are the figures who have opened your mind to expand your faith? Who are the people who have helped you to feel God’s love in startling ways? Who are the faces of your faith? This summer we’re digging deep into bold and untold stories of those often overlooked in our biblical narratives, hoping these characters remind us that we all play a role in shaping God’s story of redemption and grace.*

Prelude Be Thou My Vision – Melanie Manges, piano

Welcome to Worship – Len Wilson

Hymn of Praise  Shout to the Lord

(Verse 1) My Jesus, My Savior
Lord there is none like you
All of my days, I want to praise,
The wonders of your mighty love.
(Verse 2) My Comfort, My Shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength,
Let every breath, all that I am,
Never cease to worship you.

(Refrain) Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing.
Power and majesty, praise to the King.
Mountains bow down and the sea will roar
at the sound of your name.
I’ll sing for joy at the works of your hands.
Forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand.
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you.

Call to Worship*  – Len Wilson

Calling all children of the Living God:
The gospel is good news for every age and every stage.
Let us worship together, the young and the old.
The good news is proclaimed in God’s words,
And also with crayons, silly songs, snacks, and rest time.
Let us worship together, every generation.
After months of learning [of all kinds] behind screens
Or separated by dividers and [6 ft. of] space,
Let us worship together, with our family of faith.
We may still feel uncertain, seeing so many faces again,
But we come together seeking God’s peace in this beautiful community.
Let us worship together, united in Christ.

Children’s Sermon – Rev. Kim Brewer

Hymn of Reflection – Be Thou My Vision

(Verse 1) Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart.
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art,
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

(Verse 2) Be thou my wisdom, and thy my true word,
I ever with thee and thy with me, Lord.
Thou my great Father, and I thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling and I with thee one.

Hymn of Faith – Oh, How I Love Jesus

(Verse 1) There is a Name I love to hear,
I love to sing its worth;
It sounds like music in my ear,
The sweetest name on earth.

(Refrain) Oh, how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Because He first loved me!

(Verse 3) It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe,
Who in each sorrow bears a part,
that none can bear below.

(Refrain) Oh, how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus,
Because He first loved me!

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
