About this Sermon |

Daniel 3
In Daniel chapter 3, we meet three young Hebrew men who are the intrepid heroes of the story. But King Nebudchadnezzar offers a mirror for us to reflect on our own actions. How often do we find ourselves trying so hard to do the right thing, but miss the point? How do we determine if the “right thing” we are trying to do match the expectations of God, or are simply of our own making?

About this Series |

Who has shaped your faith? Who has nurtured you, baptized you, taught you, transformed you? Who are the figures who have opened your mind to expand your faith? Who are the people who have helped you to feel God’s love in startling ways? Who are the faces of your faith? This summer we’re digging deep into bold and untold stories of those often overlooked in our biblical narratives, hoping these characters remind us that we all play a role in shaping God’s story of redemption and grace.*

Prelude – Prelude from Cello Suite 3 in C Major – Sarah Cummings, viola

Welcome to Worship – Len Wilson

Hymn of Praise Great is the Lord

(Refrain) Great is the Lord, he is holy and just,
by his power we trust in his love.
Great is the Lord, he is faithful and true;
by his mercy he proves he is love.

(Verse 1) Great is the Lord and worthy of glory!
Great is the Lord and worthy of praise.
Great is the Lord; now lift up your voice, now lift up your voice:
Great is the Lord! Great is the Lord!

(Refrain) Great is the Lord, he is holy and just,
by his power we trust in his love.
Great is the Lord, he is faithful and true;
by his mercy he proves he is love.

(Verse 2) Great are you, Lord, and worthy of glory!
Great are you, Lord, and worthy of praise.
Great are you, Lord, I lift up my voice, I lift up my voice:
Great are you, Lord! Great are you, Lord!

Call to Worship* (inspired by Psalm 96) – Len Wilson

We come in reverent awe before the Lord our God—
for great is the Lord!
We come, to join with all creation
in singing new songs to the Lord our God.
We come in worship and praise—
for the Lord God is worthy of our praise!
We come, to share together
the news of our Glorious Lord’s saving deeds.
We come with songs and prayers—
to give well-deserved glory to the Lord!
We come, to bring our offerings of worship and praise
to the Lord our God—
whose holy splendor, honor and majesty
shines forth from God’s presence. Amen.

Hymn of Reflection – There’s Something About That Name

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus: there’s just something about that name!
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all heaven and earth proclaim:
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there’s something about that name!

Rejoice, give thanks, and sing, and triumph evermore.
(Refrain) Lift up your heart, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

(Verse 2) Our Savior, Jesus, reigns, the God of truth and love;
When he had purged our stains, he took his seat above.
(Refrain) Lift up your heart, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

(Verse 3) His kingdom cannot fail, he rules both earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given.

Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
