About this Sermon |

Exodus 1:8-22
In Exodus 1, we hear about Shiphrah and Puah, two of the Egyptian pharaoh’s midwives, courageously defy the Pharaoh’s orders to kill all male Hebrew babies. How do the treatment of the Hebrew people in ancient Egypt and the actions taken by Shiphrah and Puah apply to current times?

About this Series |

Who has shaped your faith? Who has nurtured you, baptized you, taught you, transformed you? Who are the figures who have opened your mind to expand your faith? Who are the people who have helped you to feel God’s love in startling ways? Who are the faces of your faith? This summer we’re digging deep into bold and untold stories of those often overlooked in our biblical narratives, hoping these characters remind us that we all play a role in shaping God’s story of redemption and grace.*

Prelude – “How Firm a Foundation” – Melanie Manges, organ

Welcome to Worship – Len Wilson

Hymn of Praise  “How Firm a Foundation”

(Verse 1) How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than to you he has said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

(Verse 2) “Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am your God, and will still give you aid;
I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.”

(Verse 3) “When through the deep waters I call you to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with you in trouble to bless,
And sanctify to you your deepest distress.”

Call to Worship* (inspired by Psalm 145: 1-8) – Len Wilson

Come, let’s praise God together!
For God is great and worthy of our praise!
Let’s tell stories of God’s power and majesty and mighty acts throughout history:
for God is great, and worthy of our praise!
Let’s remember the compassion God has shown us;
Let’s share stories of God’s mercy and unfailing love to generation after generation:
for God is great, and worthy of our praise!
Let’s pass these stories along to our children and grandchildren,
so that they, too, may come to know and love our God.
For God is great, and worthy of our praise!
Let’s worship God together!

Hymn of Reflection – “Seek Ye First”

(Verse 1) Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and its righteousness,
And all these things shall be added unto you; Allelu, alleluia!

(Verse 2) Ask, and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find,
Knock, and the door shall be opened unto you; Allelu, alleluia!

Hymn of Faith – “Take My Life and Let it Be”

(Verse 1) Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee;
Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love, at the impulse of thy love.

(Verse 2) Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee;
Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only, for my King, always, only, for my king.

(Verse 4) Take my love, my God, I pour at thy feet its treasure store;
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for thee, ever, only, all for thee.
