About this Sermon |

Luke 9:28-45
In Luke 9, we find an unusual story of a God sighting up on a mountain, alongside appearances of Moses & Elijah. Only Peter, James, and John accompany Jesus on the mountain to see this mysterious vision. What do we do with the reality of God’s unbounded mystery?

Welcome to Worship – Gordon Coppoc

Gathering Song “Be Still, for the Spirit of the Lord” – Worship Team

Be still, for the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy One is here.
Come, bow before him now, with reverence and with fear.
In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground.
Be still, for the Spirit of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.

Call to Worship* (from 1 Corinthians 13:1213) – Sylvia Mohler

For now we see in a mirror, dimly,
But then we will see face to face.
Now I know only in part;
Then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.
And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three;
And the greatest of these is love.
Come, let us worship God,
Who is Love, and will reveal all to those who are faithful.

Hymn of Praise – “Shine, Jesus, Shine”

(Verse 1) Lord, the light of your love is shining,
In the midst of the darkness shining;
Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us,
Set us free by the truth you now bring us,
Shine on me, shine on me.

(Refrain) Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory;
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light.

(Verse 3) As we gaze on your kingly brightness,
So our faces display your likeness;
Ever changing from glory to glory,
Mirrored here may our lives tell your story,
Shine on me, shine on me.

(Refrain) Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory;
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;
Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
 as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

New Testament Reading – Luke 9:28-36 – Rev. Hood

Hymn of Discipleship – “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”

(Verse 1) I want to walk as a child of the light; I want to follow Jesus.
God set the stars to give light to the world; the star of my life is Jesus.

(Refrain) In him there is no darkness at all; the night and the day are both alike.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God: Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

(Verse 3) I’m looking for the coming of Christ; I want to be with Jesus.
When we have run with patience the race, we shall know the joy of Jesus.

(Refrain) In him there is no darkness at all; the night and the day are both alike.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God: Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
