About this Series |

Have you ever pictured Jesus playing a game of tag with his disciples? I don’t know about you, but it is really hard for me to imagine Jesus doing anything as exciting and playful and fun as enjoying a rousing game of tag, isn’t it? But isn’t that exactly what he did when he ascended to heaven in Acts 1? I mean, maybe he wasn’t chasing them around, breathlessly & triumphantly declaring “Tag!!! You’re it!!!” But Jesus was tagging the disciples collectively, if you think about it. And this is what Jesus was saying: “Tag! You’re It! Now Y’ALL are the ones who have to preach and teach the Good News, and y’all are responsible for calling on others to join the kingdom of God! But don’t worry, the Holy Spirit will be with you & help you!” I wonder if his voice was as breathless and triumphant as ours were whenever we were finally successful in our goal of tagging the next “it”?

But here’s where this gets interesting. Because, if the disciples were the ones Jesus tapped on their shoulders to serve as “it,” then, their descendants, the “big C” church, the Church universal, of today currently holds the title of “it.” Which means it turns out that you, and me, and all our fellow believers around the world, share in this task of proclaiming the kingdom of God.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to explore this analogy a bit, and consider together what exactly it means that you and me and all of our fellow Christ-followers are called to this: that we are all “it” in a world-transforming game of tag. Join us as we explore together what that means and what that looks like.
