About this Sermon |

Luke 9:18-27, 43b-45
In Luke 9, we find two passion predictions sandwiched around the experience of three disciples on the mountain of transfiguration. In the middle of the two times that Jesus makes it abundantly clear to his disciples that the road ahead involves being arrested and left to die on a cross, God shares an important word of instruction from the mist of the cloud: “Listen to Him!” What does it mean for us to listen to Jesus now?

Prelude – “Wonderous Love” arr. Paxon – Melanie Manges, organ

Welcome to Worship – Charles Gullion

Lenten Song “I Come to the Cross” – Worship Team

I come to the cross seeking mercy and grace;
I come to the cross where you died in my place.
Out of my weakness and into your strength;
Humbly I come to the cross.

Call to Worship* – Rev. Lisa Williams Hood

Hymn of Praise – “At the Cross”

(Verse 1) Alas! And did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovereign die?
Would he devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?

(Refrain) At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away (rolled away),
It was there by faith I received my sight
And now I am happy all the day!

(Verse 4) But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away, ‘tis all that I can do!

(Refrain) At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away (rolled away),
It was there by faith I received my sight
And now I am happy all the day!

Lenten Song, Again – “I Come to the Cross” – Worship Team

I come to the cross seeking mercy and grace;
I come to the cross where you died in my place.
Out of my weakness and into your strength;
Humbly I come to the cross.
Your arms are open, you call me by name, you welcome this child that was lost.
You paid the price for my guilt and my shame;
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come to the cross.

Hymn of Discipleship – “Open My Eyes, That I May See”

(Verse 1) Open my eyes, that I may see
glimpses of truth you have for me
place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unlock and set me free.

(Refrain) Silently now, on bended knee, ready I wait your will to see;
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!

(Verse 2) Open my ears, that I may hear,
Voices of truth you send so clear;
And while the message sounds in my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

(Refrain) Silently now, on bended knee,
Ready I wait your will to see;
Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine!

“Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone?” arr. Berry
Melanie Manges, piano

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.

Offertory – “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” Maker/Shackley – Melanie Manges, piano

Doxology Melanie Manges
