About this Sermon |

The prophet Jonah has a message of just five words (in the original Hebrew) to the people of Nineveh. Those five words are all that were between the displeasure and coming judgement of God, and the salvation of an entire kingdom. God also had a message for Jonah that Jonah didn’t want to hear- the message that God cared just as much about the Ninevites as God cared about Jonah. Who might God care about just as much today?

The Summer Between: Adventures in Liminality

liminality [lim-uhnal-i-tee]: a state of transition between one stage and the next.

The Summer of 2020 finds us in the threshold between what was and what is yet to come. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are somewhere between lockdown and vaccine. In terms of civic life, we are somewhere between unrest and revolution.

What do people of faith do in liminal times like these?

Join First Baptist Church this summer for hope and perspective as Pastor Lisa Hood takes us on a journey through the scriptures, discovering how our spiritual ancestors navigated liminal times, and applying biblical truths for the living of these days.

Prelude – “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” Melanie Manges arr. Shackley

Welcome to Worship Caleb Clement

Gathering Song “Thy Word” #664

(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

(Verse 1) When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way,
Still you’re there right beside me.
And nothing will I fear as long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.

(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

(Verse 2) I will not forget your love for me,
and yet my heart forever is wandering.
Jesus, be my guide and hold me to your side;
And I will love you to the end.

(Refrain) Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Call to Worship (based on Jonah 3 & 4, by Joanna Harader) – Caleb Clement

The word of God came to Jonah
The word of God comes to us:
GO. . .
despite your fears.
SPEAK. . .
the truth of God.
LOVE. . .
your neighbor AND your enemy.
FORGIVE. . .
as you have been forgiven.
RECEIVE. . . grace upon grace,
overflowing from the fullness of God.

Hymn of Praise – “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” #80

(Verse 1) He’s got the whole world in his hands,
He’s got the whole world in his hands,
He’s got the whole world in his hands,
He’s got the whole world in his hands.
(Verse 2) He’s got the wind and the rain in his hands,
He’s got the wind and the rain in his hands,
He’s got the wind and the rain in his hands,
He’s got the whole world in his hands.
(Verse 3) He’s got the tiny little baby in his hands,
He’s got the tiny little baby in his hands,
He’s got the tiny little baby in his hands,
He’s got the whole world in his hands.
(Verse 4) He’s got you and me, brother, in his hands,
He’s got you and me, sister, in his hands,
He’s got all of us together, in his hands,
He’s got the whole world in his hands.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Hood

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Sermon – The Five Words Between – Rev. Hood

Hymn of Promise – “We Are Called to Be God’s People” #580

(Verse 1) We are called to be God’s people, showing by our lives his grace,
one in heart and one in spirit, sign of hope for all the race.
Let us show how he has changed us, and remade us as his own,
let us share our life together as we shall around his throne.
(Verse 3) We are called to be God’s prophets, speaking for the truth and right,
Standing firm for godly justice, bringing evil things to light.
Let us seek the courage needed, our high calling to fulfill.
That the world may know the blessing of the doing of God’s will.

Offering Rev. Hood

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,
Teach us to give to you all that we have and all that we are,
That we might praise you not with our words only,
But with our whole lives. Amen.
