April’s Mission-of-the-Month

Our mission for the month of April will be the Mary T. Klinker Restoring Hope Veteran Center.

Several months ago, Len Wilson asked if there was any way that we could help the veterans as one of our missions. He explained to me the great need for help in our veteran community with so many dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, PTSD, and much more. This was an area where we had not helped. Thus, our mission for the month of April will be to help veterans.

First, go to the Mary T. Klinger Restoring Hope website www.mtkvets.org to read about the Mary T. Klinker Veteran Center. It contains valuable information on veterans and the help that they need. I wanted to learn more, so I contacted Christina Loveless, who is a 40-hour-week volunteer for this organization. Christina is spearheading an effort to purchase the old National Guard Armory in Boswell, Indiana. The purchase and restoration of this armory would provide a place for needed veteran services. She has a vision of having housing for around 16 veterans once the building has been updated. The armory was built in 1953, and there will be challenges just like we have found with our own education wing and bringing in the daycare.

I asked Christina in what ways we could help. She said that they will need folding tables and chairs for their meeting room area. I told her that I thought that we could give money toward that goal. Also, the Restoring Hope center will need cleaning supplies. We will be collecting cleaning supplies for the month of April. Items needed are household  cleaners, window cleaners, scrub sponges like Scotch Brite, bathroom cleaners, dishwashing liquid, etc. The tub will be in the hallway all month.

If you want to donate to purchase the table and chairs, you can write a check and put veterans on the memo line, put cash in envelope with veterans on the outside, or give online at FBC and click blue GIVE button and page down to missions. Thank you in advance for your help with money to purchase tables and chairs and to collect much-needed cleaning supplies.
